History — Saab JAS 39 Gripen E

The JAS 39 Gripen E represents the most advanced evolution of Sweden’s indigenous multirole fighter programme. Developed by Saab as a comprehensive update rather than a simple incremental upgrade, the Gripen E was designed to meet the demands of modern air combat while preserving the core principles that defined earlier Gripen variants: efficiency, adaptability, and national independence.

Compared to the Gripen C/D, the E variant features a larger airframe with increased internal fuel capacity, enabling extended range and endurance. The aircraft is powered by the General Electric F414 engine, providing significantly greater thrust and improved performance across the flight envelope.

Avionics form the centrepiece of the Gripen E’s evolution. The aircraft is equipped with the Raven ES-05 AESA radar, advanced electronic warfare systems, and a highly integrated sensor fusion architecture.
