Tribute Tee Details — P-38J Lightning ‘Curly Six’ Tribute Tee

This tribute tee is produced in a silver-toned base, reflecting the natural metal finish characteristic of late-war P-38J Lightning aircraft. The colour references the unpainted aluminium surfaces and provides a clean, understated foundation for the graphics.

The front features a centred U.S. national insignia, rendered cleanly and at a measured scale. The layout follows period practice, presenting the roundel as a primary identifier rather than a decorative motif, and establishing a calm visual anchor for the garment.

The right sleeve carries the aircraft designation and serial reference—U.S. Army P-38J-25-LO / Air Forces Serial 44-23569—applied in a subdued stencil style. This detail mirrors the technical markings found on operational aircraft and reinforces the historical specificity of the design.

On the left sleeve, the “Curly Six” nose art appears in its original script form. The marking is applied with restraint, maintaining its character and personality without overwhelming the overall composition.

A discreet internal neck label featuring the Flight Insignia logo completes the garment. The result is a composed, historically grounded tribute to the P-38J Lightning and one of its most recognisable identities—interpreted with clarity and understatement for everyday wear.

History — P-38J Lightning

The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was conceived in the late 1930s as a high-altitude, long-range interceptor, distinguished by its twin-boom layout and centrally mounted armament. As the aircraft entered widespread combat during the early years of the Second World War, operational experience quickly revealed both its strengths and its limitations. Continuous refinement became essential as the Lightning was asked to operate farther, higher, and in increasingly demanding environments.

The P-38J represented a major step forward in that evolution. Introduced in 1943, the J-variant addressed critical performance issues encountered in earlier models, particularly in high-speed flight and engine cooling. The most visible change was the redesigned engine cooling system, which relocated the intercoolers from the leading edges of the wings to enlarged chin inlets beneath the engines. This modification significantly improved cooling efficiency and reliability, especially during sustained high-power operation.

Internally, the P-38J benefited from numerous refinements to systems and equipment. Improved turbo-supercharger control enhanced high-altitude performance, while strengthened structures increased durability under combat loads. Later production blocks introduced hydraulic aileron boost, reducing control forces at high speed and improving manoeuvrability—an important advantage during escort and interception missions.

These improvements transformed the Lightning into a more balanced and dependable combat aircraft. The P-38J retained the long range, heavy firepower, and twin-engine security that defined the type, while addressing the operational shortcomings that had limited earlier variants. As a result, the J-model became one of the most widely produced and operationally significant versions of the Lightning, serving across multiple theatres and laying the foundation for the final wartime developments of the aircraft.

“Curly Six” — P-38J Lightning

Curly Six was a P-38J Lightning operated by the U.S. Army Air Forces during the latter part of the Second World War. The aircraft carried the serial 44-23569, identifying it as a mid-1944 production airframe, and featured the name Curly Six applied in simple script nose art.

Contemporary sources identify the aircraft as being flown by Captain Jack L. Reed, serving with the 394th Fighter Squadron, 367th Fighter Group, based in France during late 1944. The unit operated the P-38 Lightning in ground-attack and fighter-bomber roles in support of Allied operations following the Normandy landings.

As with many frontline fighters, Curly Six would have been flown regularly and maintained under operational conditions, with markings applied at unit level rather than formally recorded. Its surviving photographic record provides a clear snapshot of a combat aircraft in active service, tied to a specific pilot and squadron during the closing phases of the air war in Europe.

Care instructions
General
Soft, durable, and optimised for DTG printing—built to wear well and keep its finish over time.
Wash
Wash inside-out in cold water on a gentle cycle. Use mild detergent. Avoid bleach to preserve colour and print sharpness.
Dry
Tumble dry low or hang dry. Lower heat reduces shrink risk and helps the print maintain a clean, crisp edge.
Store
Store folded in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep heavy pressure off the printed area for best longevity.
