This tribute tee references the operational Sea Harrier FA.2, the definitive Fleet Air Arm interceptor variant, interpreted through measured graphics and controlled placement.
The front composition is anchored by a horizontal checkerboard band, directly inspired by the distinctive fin marking carried by 801 Naval Air Squadron aircraft. A Royal Navy roundel is set slightly left of centre, intersecting the checkerboard band to create a measured focal point that echoes the fin marking’s visual language while staying restrained in scale and contrast.
On the right sleeve, the 801 Naval Air Squadron trident-and-wing emblem is applied with clarity, maintaining proportional distance from the cuff. The left sleeve carries the aircraft identifier 001, rendered in a clean typographic treatment consistent with the aircraft’s service markings.
The interior is finished with a discreet Flight Insignia neck label, completing the garment without visual interruption.
As with all Flight Insignia pieces, the design is guided by historical accuracy, disciplined layout, and tonal restraint—resulting in a composed tribute to the Sea Harrier FA.2 and one of the Royal Navy’s most recognisable front-line squadrons.

The Sea Harrier FA.2 represented the final and most capable evolution of Britain’s carrier-borne V/STOL fighter. Conceived during the late Cold War, the FA.2 programme addressed the growing limitations of the earlier FRS.1, whose primary strengths lay in close air combat and strike rather than long-range air defence.
The defining improvement of the FA.2 was the introduction of the Blue Vixen radar, a transformational upgrade that gave the aircraft true beyond-visual-range capability. Paired with the AIM-120 AMRAAM missile, the Sea Harrier FA.2 became a credible fleet air-defence platform, able to detect, track, and engage multiple targets well beyond the horizon. Avionics were comprehensively modernised, with improved mission computers, navigation systems, and cockpit displays enhancing pilot workload management and situational awareness.
These changes shifted the Sea Harrier’s role decisively. While retaining the agility and short-deck flexibility that defined the Harrier family, the FA.2 moved from a point-defence fighter to a forward-looking interceptor designed to protect task groups at sea. Entering service in the early 1990s, it remained a uniquely capable aircraft until its retirement in 2006, closing the chapter on fixed-wing Fleet Air Arm fighters.

801 Naval Air Squadron is one of the most distinguished squadrons in Royal Navy aviation history, with origins dating back to the Second World War. Over successive decades, the squadron operated a wide range of aircraft types, consistently adapting to the evolving demands of naval air power.
In the Sea Harrier era, 801 NAS became closely associated with frontline carrier operations, including combat deployments and sustained maritime air defence duties. The squadron’s experience during the Falklands War cemented its reputation for operational effectiveness, and its later transition to the Sea Harrier FA.2 placed it at the forefront of the Fleet Air Arm’s modernisation.
Through disciplined training, distinctive unit markings, and a strong operational identity, 801 Naval Air Squadron came to symbolise the final generation of British carrier-based fighters—an enduring legacy shaped by innovation, adaptability, and service at sea.
